There is far more happiness to be found in being someone vs. being something. To choose to be someone vs. something is a profound personal acknowledgment that our worth is not defined by external labels or societal roles but rather by the unique qualities, values, and experiences that make us who we are.

The world often categorizes people based on achievements, possessions, or societal positions. We see it daily on social media, making it easy to lose sight of our unique intrinsic value. So, whatever the label, we can all be tempted to use “things” to shape or define our identities and influence. Yet, when considering how we are perceived by others,  it is essential to always remember that things or being something will not ever encompass the entirety of our being.

To not be something but to be someone is recognition that beneath these external trappings lies our deeper core, a collection of our thoughts, emotions, aspirations and the beliefs that define our true selves: Acknowledging our inner world and embracing the qualities that set us apart from others. It is the collective of our values, passions and relationships that truly make us memorable individuals, moving us beyond the superficial and materialistic aspects of life and placing our focus on personal growth and self-discovery is the secret. Exploring our inner potential, developing our talents and cultivating meaningful connections with others establishes the setting for us to embrace and nurture our selves at the deepest levels so we can lead more fulfilling and purposeful lives.

To not be something but be someone also reminds us of the inherent dignity and worth of every human being. It is an idea that reminds us that our value does not depend on external achievements or societal recognition but on the qualities that make us good humans. Each of us has a unique perspective to offer, a story to tell and contributions to make to the world. If we own our inherent worth — and also that of others — we can begin to foster empathy, compassion and respect for the diverse tapestry of humanity.
