Perception is the ability to see, hear or become aware of something through the senses. When we are perceiving, we are regarding, understanding, interpreting through our senses with intuition and insight.✨
Perceive comes from percipere in Latin which means to seize or understand. Perceptions are formed using all the signals that course through our nervous system and result in physical or chemical stimulation of our senses. All of this comes together to shape our learning, memory, expectation and attention. ✨
While perceptions gather physically, sensorily, computationally and philosophically, all together the information from these perceptual systems form “realities” in the mind of the perceiver. ✨
I use the word “realities” loosely because perceptions can change…often and like the breeze…which means our realities are quite malleable and flexible, too. ✨
While we all seek to form opinions because they make us feel secure, it is our experience, motivational and emotional states that contribute greatly to those opinions—which are not necessarily real as they may not be universal opinions for all. Further, they may be assessed based on a series of prior events that no longer constitute relevant or current information with the situation or relationship at hand. ✨
Questioning our perceptions or realities is always a worthy endeavor. After all, reality is philosophically defined as existence that is absolute, self-sufficient, objective and not subject to human decisions or conventions. ✨
