Recently I was watching our 18 year old son tie his shoes. He tied them in a way I never have. It startled me. My first reaction was, “I’m his Mom! Why doesn’t he tie his shoes like I do? Where did he ever learn that way of tying anyway?!” In a brief moment of drama, I felt like a horrible mother! “Where was I when he was learning how to tie his shoes? How could I have been absent for something so basic? Who taught him?” Then, reason prevailed (and cessation of self-flagellation) and I thought, “There is no best way. No one way. No only way.” Just like life. There are many ways we each uniquely learn, approach, solve, deal with and confront life, others, tasks…and tying shoes.
