Remember those cartoons where the character had a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other?

There’s a little of that good guy and bad guy in all of us.

As different as we all are from one another—as unique as we are— we’re all actually more the same than we are different. We are all sets of juxtaposed emotions. This doesn’t need to frighten, nor overwhelm us. Emotions move like the tides, rising and flowing out. Accepting this as early on in life as possible, helps each of us feel more comfortable with allowing our caring, compassionate aspects to shine.

No two people, no two lives will ever be the same. It’s life’s great mystery. While we all begin life the same way in birth, and we all leave the same way in death, the journey in between is vast and varied.

Laughing and crying. Peaceful and angry. Growing and trying. Living and dying. It’s all good. It’s all life. All coupled with feelings about our wonderful days and sad ones too. All the while, trying to find healthy ways to deal with our emotions in ways that won’t hurt ourselves or others. Figuring out love which is an active noun like clash, conflict, attempt and struggle. Striving to love ourselves and others.

So let me close with this: Even if you still think you’re a tangled mess of emotions, you are lovable just the way you. Mr. Rogers…and Billy Joel got that right.
