How we choose to spend the first hour of each day and last two hours is very important. We benefit greatly from choosing to spend this time carefully.

I wake up, drink 2-4 glasses of water and brew a cup of tea with honey. While the tea is brewing, I do pushups against the kitchen counter or drop to the floor and do a plank for 60 seconds. Then, I write. My head is clear and most-filled with ideas I dreamed up all night long as I processed bits and pieces of conversations I heard throughout the day along with things I may have observed. I do this all before anyone else in my home is awake.

Then, each evening, before going to sleep I allow myself a half hour to respond to comments to my blog posts and then I read a book. Fiction if I want to escape, business if I’m trying to figure something out, inspirational if I want to percolate or biographies when I want to be reinvigorated by the journeys of others. Often I’m reading 3-4 books at the exact same time. In the evening, whatever urge I’m feeling determines which I’ll read.

Those last two hours of the day set the tone for a peaceful night’s sleep. I tell myself right before sleeping that I will sleep well and in the morning I will remember all that arises in my thoughts, if necessary.  If I awake during the night, I tell myself firmly: I am sleeping now. That self-command is remarkably helpful. If I feel the slightest bit worried that I might forget something that popped into my head, I make a note of it on a pad I keep next to my bed and reiterate: I am sleeping now.

These three hours each day are priceless to me. They set the tone for 24 hours of both awake and sleep time.

Time is the most valuable thing we have. Think carefully about how you choose to start your first hour and how you end your day with your last two.
