You may know, I am a member of the Hypnotists Union, the American & International Associations of Counselors and Therapists, and my profile is on Psychology Today.  These days, I’m hired by executives to help them carefully consider messaging — though I do share ideas on my blog for free! My consulting work aligns perfectly to my endless fascination with how the conscious & unconscious aspects of our brains work — and how media, marketing and advertising messages might use this to their advantage. The recent @nbcsnl monologue by Woody Harrelson is a perfect example that I’ll be touting  for years. •  @woodyharrelson addressed a variety of current events and societal issues with humor, enrolling the enthralled audience. In the last 45 seconds, he concluded by sharing a plot to a script that he had read but threw away because he thought it to be too absurd. This joke drew limited laughter. •  The lack of laughter was contemplation worthy. Sometimes people don’t get a joke or just don’t think it is funny. Sometimes the joke hits hard and triggers an emotional response we may or may not be ready to process. Sometimes we are too tired to consider what the comedian is saying.  •  But what fascinated me most were the news headlines Sunday morning which claimed Mr. Harrelson: “Floats” (TMZ); “Spouts” (Forbes); “Includes” (USA Today); “Spreads” (Rolling Stone); “Controversial” (Variety) … “conspiracy theories.”  • Clearly Mr. Harrelson tapped into a mass subconsciousness within the staff at these outlets who felt a need to report, dispute, object & publicize a skit from an actor/comedian, on one of the longest running comedy shows on TV, who referenced a too hard to fathom movie script that was so absurd he said he tore it up and threw it away. •  The subconscious mind is very powerful. It is processing information all day long with our knowledge & without it — but filing away nonetheless. • Lessons are everywhere if we risk opening our minds to see them. Let’s keep comedy alive. It keeps us thinking.
