Every person we meet & each situation we encounter throughout our lives can teach us more about who we are. Those people and things we find wonderful, loving, exciting, annoying, selfish, nagging, sweet, charming, arrogant, clever, fun, aggravating, arrogant or whatever…present both challenges and clear mirrors into ourselves if we can reflect on the person or situation with love.
Reflecting is key, because in the moment, we may not see things so clearly—although this is certainly the goal. Understanding that what we are seeing in others is an innermost reflection of something within ourselves that needs to be acknowledged and accepted, is important to becoming kinder, gentler and more wise.
To get to know ourselves better, so we can all relate to others and situations more positively, here’s an exercise: Imagine what might happen in life, if we each began giving ourselves the gifts we’re hoping someone would give us. Would it be something material that we’d buy for ourselves? A gesture showing utmost generosity of spirit? Greater kindness & compassion towards our faults and errors? Genuine enthusiasm for our achievements? Focus & attention to what is being said & felt so understanding within our relationships grows deeper? What would it be?
If we can each start giving these things to ourselves first, we can be less judgmental and harsh in how we see others and what we expect from them. It’s a process, but today is a good day for all of us to keep giving it a try.
