Did you know that the white matter in our brains, myelin, actually becomes more dense whenever we challenge ourselves to learn a new skill?  Committing to being a lifelong student of learning is one of the best ways to stay sharp throughout life and ward off memory loss as well as dementia.

Learning stimulates neurons  in our brains and more neural pathways are formed which means our electrical impulses can travel faster which actually makes it easier to process new information and learn more readily the next time we want to do extra learning. Interestingly, science shows that knowledge builds on itself. In other words, everything we learn helps us to add layers of new knowledge with greater ease.

Research has also concluded that building up all these new neural pathways makes us less likely to develop dementia because active brains seem to have less of an opportunity to demyelinate (or lose myelin) because the neural pathways seem to remain in better shape for the electrical impulses to travel along them.

Clearly these are all great reasons to keep learning. Then, add the facts that we become more well-rounded and interesting, add up to make life more interesting and each of us more attractive….and who wouldn’t like to be more attractive? 😉 So, the challenge is issued: What are you going to do to learn more and brain train?
