We all are busy. But, are we’re spending too much time on things that feel urgent yet may actually be less important in the big scheme of life, while maybe not enough time on things that are less urgent, but really more important? This is a personal question — but we each might benefit from asking it of ourselves, and if we don’t like the answer, deciding what we’re going to do about it

Let’s look at an example. We all know that taking a walk; exercising in some way; allowing ourselves to pause and breathe to center our emotions; or even to just stopping to connect with a loved one — are scientifically proven to be beneficial to health and longevity. Yet, our days get busy: We juggle demands from life including clients, co-workers, bosses, families and more.

Busy or not, we need to set our priorities: If we’re sick, nothing will get done!  New research confirms that sporadic bouts of exercise throughout the day, even if the exercise is only between 1-10 minutes at a time, is beneficial. The most recent research confirms what my brother and I wrote about in our health book, TurboCharged, whereby we endorsed 1-minute muscle stressing exercises 5 times a day. Now more research validates that every 30 minutes of light intensity activity per day —even it if is not done consecutively — is linked to a 17% lower risk of early death.  This can include things as simple as walking, gardening, housework & car washing, etc.  Get a little more vigorous physical activity and the risk reduction benefits rise to 33%.

My day is filled with mini exercises. I wake and stretch. While my cappuccino in brewing I do 30 pushups against the kitchen counter. If I want a second cup— I squat against a wall or plank until it is brewed. I jump on a rebounder, often during conference calls or walk at my treadmill desk.  Additionally, I walk everywhere in NYC and if I’m out of the city— I park far from the front door of any store I’m shopping in. In between I pick up 5 pound weights and curl them when I get the urge. It works. Tell me how you are (and will start!) adding some more exercise into your daily routine!
