Society creates a lot of rules in an effort to control behavior. Following some rules make a lot of sense—like looking both ways before crossing the street. Others may be up for reexamination.
Rules are forms of beliefs and every rule is followed based on our belief. They hold their power because someone told us or somehow we concluded that the rule was true.
Let’s examine the belief that if we wake up at dawn or stay awake past midnight we’ll be too tired to function the next day. While this may be true…we might also be missing some beautiful sunrises or great late night conversations.
At the root of the issue with this rule is the fact that we might like sleep and want to feel rested. So what if we created a new rule that stated: When I go to bed, I fall into a deep, restful sleep and awake feeling fantastic.
I recently was on-set filming some commercials in beautiful Turks & Caicos and decided it might be time to question my old rule and test a new one. And, you know what? For the rest of my life, I’ll be seeing more sunrises and enjoying delightful conversations getting to know all kinds of people more deeply later into the night. And, as a result of my new rule, I am also more energized!
Try this yourself — or consider re-writing a few of your own rules. I look forward to hearing about your experiences.
