Can you imagine life if we each chose to stop using past negative experiences and emotions that are associated with our recollections of others, as present day references? Certainly it would take a lot of practice, but if we’re not individually in control of our thoughts, words and actions, who is?

There is rarely a benefit to holding onto hurtful or painful memories related to others in our lives, past or present. It’s faulty thinking to believe these memories will somehow protect us now or necessarily apply in the future.

The only reason we might want to recall an adverse past experience with another is if we can reframe it as an experience that contributed beneficially to our growth and helped to make us the wonderful beings we are today. If professional help is necessary to accomplish this, it’s a good investment.

The practice of waking up and reframing (or visualizing) each day, ourselves and others as ‘clean slates,’ helps us to see the opportunities, uniqueness, spontaneity, joy, happiness, potential, and more in the moment. It’s not easy, but it’s the root of love.
