Want to really open up your thought processes? Start considering Option #3.

Most often when we are faced with a decision, we focus on dualities like, for example, 1) Staying or 2) Going. If we choose between duality,  we are likely thinking we have to select one and give up the other. These situations tend to make one or all parties dissatisfied with the conclusion.

When confronting these situations, instead of thinking we have to choose between Option 1 or 2 — what if we told ourselves that either there is potential for a merged compromise between 1 & 2 or that we can opt to find an altogether unique 3rd Option, which lessens the worry we might have about choosing 1 or 2.

We can’t avoid problems nor decision times, but we can use our creativity to continue thinking up new solutions. By trying to find alternate resolutions, new paths usually appear.

The more we practice this way of thinking, the less often we feel threatened by the dilemma of making a choice. Practice it regularly enough and we might find ourselves noticing opportunities everywhere instead of situations where the possibilities feel limited.
