(SD-SP) This month kicks off summer vacation for children who are ready and excited for time off from school. While summer is a great time to make family memories, it is also a time that many parents worry about the “summer slide,” which is when students lose academic knowledge from not being in school regularly. For this reason, many schools initiate summer reading programs and distribute workbooks to keep children academically challenged over the summer months. But what about adults? Can they use these summer months to improve their brain health? Absolutely! Here are a few ways:

 Sleep

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, sleep throughout a whole night is optimal for learning and memory. If you’re not careful, summer could rob you from getting the sleep you need to stay sharp. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the ideal temperature for sleep is between 60 and 67 degrees. While summer might bring more relaxation, it also comes with hot temperatures and increased daylight, which may not be ideal for sleeping! Yana Banerjee, CRNP, a nurse practitioner at the Penn Sleep Center, provides valuable tips and suggestions for getting enough sleep during the summer months that include keeping your bedroom cool, investing in sheets with breathable fabric, and looking into blackout curtains.

Read

Assign yourself some summer reading. According to this Real Simple article, reading can increase intelligence, boost your brain power, make you more empathetic, help you relax, and help you sleep. If you need inspiration to start reading (or, in some cases, a deadline to finish!), start a summer book club with friends or family and try to read a book in June, July, and August! If you have children or grandchildren, it might be fun to see what they are reading and read it, too. Then schedule time to discuss it with them when you are finished, whether in-person or over the phone.

Supplement

The brain controls everything we think and do, yet we often don’t remember to take care of it. This summer, grab a 3-month or 6-month supply of CocoaVia Memory+, a supplement containing 750mg of cocoa flavanols per daily serving, and take advantage of $20 off now until June 30 with the promo code BRAIN20. The cocoa flavanols in CocoaVia™ Memory+ have been clinically proven to improve memory and brain function in as little as eight weeks when taken daily. Cocoa flavanols increase blood flow throughout the body, including parts of the brain that are sensitive to aging, delivering the high levels of oxygen and nutrients that your brain needs to maintain optimal performance. Studies have proven an improvement in word recall, enhanced spatial memory, and long-term memory.

This summer, make your brain health a priority. While it might not be a break from school for you, it can be a break from a hectic year and time to refocus, putting your brain at the top of the list! Start implementing these tips soon because before you know it, Fall will be here! You can start today by purchasing a 3-month or 6-month supply of CocoaVia Memory+ for $20 off now through June 30 with the promo code BRAIN20.
