Lately I’ve been picking up all the heads up pennies I find on the streets during my NYC strolls.  I used to wonder why people would pick up a penny. Sometimes I’ll admit I was even embarrassed when someone would say, “Stop! I just saw a penny and have to pick it up!” Often I felt like it was stealing from someone who might need that penny more than me, even though these days you can’t buy anything with one — or even five!

Yet one day a couple of weeks ago, I was feeling kind of emotionally down. So I decided to do my best to shift the energy into some force more positive, so I took a walk. As I was walking down the street, I saw a beat up, yet still sparkling copper penny. I walked about a half block further and decided that I was going back to pick up that penny. Somehow, in that moment, my spirits began to inexplicably lift.

When I arrived home, I asked our kids, who happened to be home, if they could read the year. Even by taking a picture and magnifying it — I couldn’t determine the date. Both shocked me as they confirmed it was the year of my birth! Suddenly, I felt significantly uplifted and really glad I chose to take that walk!

Then, yesterday while taking a walk I saw another penny. I almost hesitated, but instead I stopped to pick it up. It was a 1984 penny! The year I moved to New York City.

I believe in forces of nature that are far greater than me, which I call God. I believe I am a receiver of all kinds of universal messages that if I stay tuned in, are there to somehow assure me things will ultimately be okay. And while they might not be the exact okay I would hope for? I know I have the dynamic force of energy and experience to handle whatever comes my way.

So tell me: Do you pick up pennies? Why?
