At any and every stage of life, an optimistic outlook toward our challenges, adversities, losses and setbacks is beneficial. If we can look at everything that happens as a necessary lesson—whether we like it or not—our mental and physical health will benefit. Even the most unanticipated and unpleasant situations can be seen as a chance to learn about what we want to improve upon going forward, healing physically, mentally or spiritually. Utilizing our optimistic powers, seeing life as a series of lessons, can make our disappointments new opportunities to build our resiliency.

A career loss can expand our sights into new work directions, possibly with a new focus set on something we would prefer to be doing. Relationship pain offers lessons in improving communication, setting boundaries, developing trust and releasing doubts. A health setback holds lessons in making self-care a priority—improving diet, stress management and physical activity.

When we opt to find the lessons in adversities, we are choosing healthy personal growth. We are making the decision to define our situations instead of letting such situations define us.
