Label the action before it labels you.

This is one of my favorite phrases. It’s a great way to remember we are not our emotions, our mistakes, our jobs or anything else. We’re a human be-ing who is trying our best.

We might have a sad feeling— but this doesn’t make us a sad person.

We might feel worry, irritable or lacking concentration — but this doesn’t make us an anxious person.

We might get angry — but this doesn’t mean we are an angry person.

We might cry — but this doesn’t mean we are weak.

We might have a job that occupies a lot of our time —but our work is not who we are, it is something we do.

Whatever it is that someone is doing (ourselves included) learn to label the action…but don’t let it label you or someone else.
