Holiday stress triggers increased arguments, due to anticipation and disappointments over gifts, plans, spending, cooking, cleaning up, conversational topics, family dynamics and more. 63% feel stressed out instead of celebratory during this time of year. (This statistic is the average I calculated from six studied that asked the same question during the past five years.)

What makes this ironic is that this same collective of studies reported that the #1 reason people enjoy the holidays is that we get to spend more quality time with those we love.

Interesting isn’t it? While we’re excited to see family and friends —we’re stressing about it and arguing more.

I believe the reason for this is simple: While this is the Season of Light and Renewal, we are somehow buying into the belief that the holidays will magically transform everyone and everything around us. This belief leads to unrealistic expectations of others, situations and even ourselves. Add excessive drinking, overeating, lack of rest & poor sleep — and you’ve created the perfect formula for stress and disappointment

The Season of Light implies new opportunities to see what is around us as we renew our enthusiasm and spirit towards all the magic inherent in each new dawn. It is a wonderful time of the year as is every other day we wake up and see the light of a day.
