“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones is often playing in my head. I think there’s a lot of truth in that title, but I particularly like the subsequent line that holds a bit more insight about a life philosophy: “You get what you need.”

Being comfortable with aging is closely associated with a kind of wisdom that embraces our years as a necessary byproduct of growth. The Silver Disobedience® mindset can be defined as one that acknowledges and accepts our past mistakes and all kinds of losses—physically, emotionally and external to us—while still believing we can improve and grow.

We can all learn to recognize the good and the bad within ourselves and outside of ourselves, yet still try to learn from it all. We know our bodies are changing—and maybe we’re more forgetful than we once were. Still, we’re adaptable, bringing lighthearted humor to our lives as we recognize what we can change and accept what we cannot.

We’re not giving up nor settling for less: Instead, we are challenging ourselves in new ways, by redefining our goals without feeling the need to justify them to others. This is the freedom inherent in Silver Disobedience® — it’s not about age, it’s all about attitude.

Spend some time thinking about how you can get your ya-yas out!
