Our brains control motions, thoughts, sleep, dreams & nightmares, breathing, heartbeat, muscle contractions & blinking. As the ultimate high speed computer, the brain also decides in a split second to swerve to avoid danger coming in our direction.

Brains require a steady supply of oxygen-rich blood to maintain optimal reaction time and to avoid memory loss.  This said, eating the right foods can certainly help prevent a mind-altering stroke which is most often triggered by atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) and high blood pressure.

Research shows that the Top 10 foods for increasing the calcium, magnesium and potassium we need for blood pressure control, while also boosting brainpower nutrients are the following daily:  1 cup Milk or yogurt; 1/2 cup Spinach; 1/2 cup Black-eyed peas; 1/2 cup Acorn Squash; 3 oz. Pink Salmon (canned is fine); 1/2 cup Kidney beans; 3/4 cup Orange Juice; 1 medium Papaya; 1/2 cup BokChoy; 1/2 of a Baked Potato.  Runners up? 1/2 cup Broccoli; 2 tbsp. Wheat germ; a Banana; 3 oz. firm Tofu; 1-2 oz. of raw, unsalted nuts — like walnuts & almonds; any mix of fruits and vegetables that you like, ideally 5-7 per day.

Researchers estimate this type of diet would reduce stroke by 27% in the US. Imagine the impact if we all added some oxygen pumping exercise —even something as simple as 30 minutes of brisk walking.  Sounds to me like it’s time to get smarter!
