Much of what we know has been learned by trial and error. While we’ve had successes and enjoyed glory, we’ve also experienced failures. Some failures may have been accompanied by ridicule, pain, humiliation and other uncomfortable feelings.

Upon achieving success, our unconscious mind does not wipe out our memories of pain and failure.  The unconscious dreads pain, humiliation and fatigue, and will avoid such emotions at all costs. This explains our inertia when action would be to our advantage.

Rather than face the possibility of pain, unconsciously recollecting our past failures, we decide not to act at all or we choose an easier task—often without finishing because we stop before we risk the possibility of yet another failure.

The secret to breaking a spell of inertia is this: Act as if it were impossible to fail. This act of imagination turns failure to success. Note I said “act.” So you do have to do something. You must imaginatively capture the state of mind you’d be in “as if” your success was inevitable.

Sigh with relief, knowing that by acting “as if,” you can allow your mind to use its already existing aptitude that in the past you may have lacked the energy to exploit! Insist to yourself you must reach the goal as soon as possible. Hold the mood of how you’ll feel, as if waiting for a word of command. Imagine the energy and let it release. Give yourself working orders with the indisputable knowledge that your Higher Power (whatever you believe in) wants you to live life to the fullest. While doing this, act to make yourself more focused yet flexible.

Change up your routines. If you need to exercise, get sneakers on at a set time. Put fruit on the counter—so you grab it before junk. Go to yard sales and bookstores. Buy all the books about whatever you want to accomplish. Pile them in a place so you can’t resist the temptation to open them and learn. Take selfies in your power suits for your new career. Whatever! Visualize. Feel it. Imagine. Act. Succeed. You can do it! Today’s a good day to write out your plan of action detailing whatever it is that you want to do.
