Did you know the brain is as individualized as our fingertips? No two brains act alike— even those of identical twins. More cool? Brains are in a constant state of change. And here’s why this is important: How our brains change is directly impacted by daily challenges & experiences throughout our lives. The brain is so supple & responsive to what we think that it is in a constant state of reorganization. Thoughts, emotions & memory can actually be self-regulated for the most part & our ability to recollect studied or past events can be sharpened.
Stress without counter-balance of relaxation along with inadequate use of our brains is what starts the deterioration process. These are the effects we’re noticing when we’re getting moody, forgetting things & maybe even making questionable decisions.

Three main factors trigger mental decline: Poor diet & lack of exercise which cause preventable diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure & strokes, and then dying curiosity or giving up on being interested in living. While poor diet & no exercise are kind of obvious causes, due to lack of nutrition & inadequate oxygenation — disinterest in living is surprisingly underestimated. Disinterest in living is most noticeable when a long-time partner dies or leaves, and the other person retreats. Other factors can trigger disinterest as well, like moves, job changes & loneliness.
But the good news is: We can stay sharp & due to the malleable nature of our brains reverse certain decline we may have noticed.
How? Start problem solving: With work, reading (especially mystery books), brain games, writing, self education or class learning…and staying fit because a fit body builds a strong mind. Get socializing & figure out how you’re going to relax. Breathing with eyes closed—even for a minute, helps.
