Brains require a steady supply of oxygen-rich blood to maintain optimal reaction time and avoid memory loss. This said, eating the right foods can help prevent a mind-altering stroke, which is most often triggered by atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) and high blood pressure.
Research shows that the top 10 daily foods for increasing the calcium, magnesium and potassium we need for blood pressure control, while also boosting brainpower nutrients, are the following: 1 cup milk or yogurt; 1/2 cup spinach; 1/2 cup black-eyed peas; 1/2 cup acorn squash; 3 oz. pink salmon (canned is fine); 1/2 cup kidney beans; 3/4 cup orange juice; 1 medium papaya; 1/2 cup bok choy; 1/2 of a baked potato. Runners up? 1/2 cup broccoli; 2 tbsp. wheat germ; a banana; 3 oz. firm tofu; 1-2 oz. of raw, unsalted nuts (like walnuts and almonds); any mix of fruits and vegetables that you like, ideally 5-7 per day.
